Electrical Design for Malabar Resources CHPP Projects

JMB Engineering has been a long-standing electrical engineering partner for Malabar Resources, providing design, modelling and drafting services across their underground coal mining operations and coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) facilities. Key projects include the Co-Disposal project and the Stacker 1 upgrade, alongside ongoing operational engineering support.

Co-Disposal Project

The Co-Disposal project at Malabar involved electrical design and engineering for new materials handling infrastructure. JMB Engineering delivered the electrical design package covering power distribution, motor control, instrumentation and control system interfaces. Our scope included single line diagrams, schematic drawings, cable schedules, equipment specifications and coordination with the broader project engineering team to ensure the design was constructable, compliant and aligned with site standards.

Stacker 1 Upgrade

JMB Engineering provided electrical engineering for the overhaul and upgrade of Stacker 1 at the Malabar CHPP. This included review and update of existing electrical schematics, drive system engineering, protection coordination for the stacker supply and commissioning support. The project required close coordination with the site maintenance team to minimise downtime and deliver a reliable, fully documented upgrade.

Ongoing Malabar Engineering Support

Beyond major projects, JMB Engineering provides continuous electrical engineering support to Malabar across both underground and surface operations, including:

  • Monthly modelling services — Ongoing SKM Power Tools modelling for Ulan West and Maxwell Underground, supporting longwall moves, new development panels and changing network configurations
  • HV single line diagram updates — Maintaining accurate, current HV documentation across the operation
  • Substation protection engineering — Protection relay change engineering, HV protection updates and equipment fault level reviews
  • Electrical drafting — Ongoing schematic updates, design packages and as-built documentation
  • Concept design — Including the CT80 conversion to electric concept design for future equipment upgrades
  • C5 conveyor and stacker commissioning — Electrical engineering support for major conveyor infrastructure projects
