Electrical Protection Modelling — DigiCo Data Centre, Sydney
JMB Engineering is providing electrical protection modelling and power system study services for DigiCo’s SYD1 data centre development in Sydney. This project involves detailed power system analysis to support the design and commissioning of critical electrical infrastructure for a high-availability data centre environment.
Project Overview
Data centres demand the highest levels of electrical reliability, with redundant power paths, precise fault discrimination and rapid protection clearing times essential to maintaining uptime. JMB Engineering is delivering power system studies using SKM Power Tools to model the facility’s electrical distribution network and develop protection coordination settings that ensure selective fault clearance without unnecessary tripping of redundant supply paths.
Scope of Work
- Fault level analysis — Modelling of prospective fault currents throughout the distribution network from utility intake to rack-level distribution
- Protection coordination — Development of relay settings and protective device coordination to achieve selective fault clearance across all voltage levels
- Arc flash assessment — Incident energy calculations to support PPE selection and safe working procedures
- Load flow studies — Verification of voltage regulation, cable sizing and transformer loading under normal and contingency operating scenarios
- Motor starting studies — Assessment of voltage dip during large motor starting events on critical cooling and mechanical plant
Data Centre Expertise
The data centre sector represents a growing area of focus for JMB Engineering. The electrical engineering challenges in these facilities — including high fault levels, complex grounding systems, harmonic-rich environments and stringent uptime requirements — align closely with our core competencies in power system modelling and protection engineering. Our practical, site-experienced approach ensures that study outputs translate directly into implementable protection settings and engineering documentation.
