Power System Protection Studies — DigiCo SYD1 Data Centre, Sydney

JMB Engineering delivered the complete power system protection studies for DigiCo’s SYD1 hyperscale data centre expansion in Ultimo, Sydney — a $600M+ project bringing the campus to 88MW of total power capacity.

Project Overview

When you’re protecting infrastructure that keeps Australia’s digital economy running, there’s zero room for error. JMB Engineering was engaged to model the facility’s electrical distribution network and develop protection coordination settings across the entire site, ensuring selective fault clearance without unnecessary tripping of redundant supply paths.

Scope of Work

The project covered six independent protection streams (A through F) spanning three voltage levels — 33kV, 11kV, and 415V — across the facility:

  • Overcurrent, short circuit, and earth fault protection — Relay modelling and settings development across all voltage levels
  • DRUPS protection coordination — Diesel Rotary UPS protection engineering for critical redundant power paths
  • Earth leakage protection — Engineering of earth leakage protection schemes across all six streams
  • Peer-reviewed protection reports — Full protection study reports delivered for every stream
  • Wrap-around coordination study — A comprehensive coordination assessment tying all six streams together, ensuring every relay, every breaker, and every protection device operates in the right sequence under every fault scenario

End-to-End Support

JMB didn’t just hand over reports and walk away. We provided end-to-end support through the entire protection relay setting process — staying involved until the last relay was configured and the system was live.

Why It Matters

This project is proof that the skills JMB Engineering has built protecting critical power systems in some of Australia’s toughest underground environments translate directly to protecting the infrastructure powering Australia’s digital future. Same discipline. Same rigour. Different surface.
